Installing Creative Plug and Play (PnP) Audio Cards on Windows NT 4.0

This README is divided into three sections:
- Installing Creative Plug and Play (PnP) Audio Cards on Windows NT 4.0
- Installing Creative Legacy Audio Cards on Windows NT 4.0
- Installing Creative Drivers When Service Pack 3 is Installed

    Installing Creative Plug and Play Audio Cards on Windows NT 4.0
    ===============================================================

WARNING : Please remove all previously installed legacy drivers or PnP
   drivers before you install.

        To remove previous Creative drivers:

        1. Log on to your computer as an Administrator.

        2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
           Control Panel.

        3. Double-click the Multimedia icon.

        4. On the Devices tab, remove entries with the term "Creative"
           from under Audio Devices and MIDI Devices And Instruments.
           These are the previously installed Sound Blaster drivers.

        5. Restart your computer when prompted.

1. If you can find the PNPISA.SYS driver on your computer (that is, it
   is already installed), go to Step 4.

2. Insert the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
   In <CDROM_Drive>:\drvlib\pnpisa\x86,
   right-click PNPISA.INF, and then click Install. 

   If you don't see this file, on the Options menu of Windows Explorer,
   click View. On the View tab, click the Show All Files option,
   and then clear the Hide Extensions For Known File Types check box.

3. Restart your computer when prompted.

4. Log on to your computer as an Administrator.

   You will see a series of "New Hardware Found" message boxes
   and prompts to install drivers for your card.

   For each driver:

5. Click the OK button in the Configuration dialog box.
   If the previous installation was not completed properly,
   click the Set Configuration Manually button and proceed to Step 9.
 
6. () For
        * Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play
        * Creative Advanced Wave Effects Synthesis Plug and Play
        * game port
      click the Driver From Disk Provided By Hardware Manufacturer
      option.
   () For
        * Creative 3D Stereo Enhancement Technology
        * IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller
      click the Windows NT Default Driver option.

   The Install From Disk dialog box appears.

7. If you are installing for the game port, insert the Windows NT 4.0
   CD-ROM into the drive and enter
     <CDROM_Drive>:\drvlib\audio\sbpnp\i386
   and then click the OK button.
  
   Otherwise, insert the Creative CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, type
    E:\WINNTDRV
   if E:\ is the path of the drive, and then click the OK button.

8. In the Select Device dialog box, click the device you want to
   install in the Models box, and then click the OK button.

   The Resources tab of the Configuration dialog box appears.

9. If there are any conflicting devices in the Resource Settings box,
   resolve the conflict as follows:

   a) In the Setting Based On box, click Basic Configuration 0001.
   b) Select the setting to change in the Resource Settings box,
      and then click the Change Setting button.
   c) Click a setting that does not conflict with another device,
      and then click the OK button.
   d) Repeat this sequence for any settings that show a conflict.

10. Click the OK button.

11. Restart your computer when prompted.

12. Your Sound Blaster card should work properly. If you
    need to change the resources that your card is using, in 
    Control Panel, click the Multimedia icon, click the Devices tab,
    select the Sound Blaster driver to change, click the Properties
    button, and then click the Settings button. Go back to Step 9. 

Known issues
------------
- If you have problems settings up your Sound Blaster PnP card and you
  have a PnP BIOS on your computer, you may have to enable it in the
  CMOS settings.  Consult your computer manual or the manufacturer for
  information on enabling your PnP BIOS.

- You can install only one Sound Blaster audio card on your computer.

- If a previous non-PnP audio driver is installed, remove your old
  Sound Blaster driver using the Multimedia Control Panel and restart
  your computer before responding to new PnPISA configuration dialogs. 
  Removal of the Sound Blaster device is accomplished through the
  Device tab in the Multimedia Control Panel.


     Installing Creative Legacy Audio Cards on Windows NT 4.0
     =========================================================

    1. Log on to your computer as an Administrator.

    2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
       Control Panel.

    3. Double-click the Multimedia icon.

    4. On the Devices tab, remove entries with the term "Creative"
       from under Audio Devices and MIDI Devices And Instruments.
       These are the previously installed Sound Blaster drivers.

    5. Click the Add button.

    6. In the List Of Drivers box on the Add dialog box,
       click Unlisted Or Updated Driver, and click the OK button.

    7. In the Install Driver dialog box, type
         E:\WINNTDRV
       if E:\ is the drive letter, and insert the Creative CD-ROM
       which contains the OEMSETUP.INF file into the CD-ROM drive.
       Click the OK button.

    8. In the Add Unlisted Or Updated Driver dialog box,
       click Creative Sound Blaster 16, and then click the OK button.

    9. Click the New button.

   10. When prompted, select the Sound Blaster hardware settings such
       as base I/O address, DMA, IRQ and MPU-401 port settings.
       All the .SYS files will be copied into the
       C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory. The .ACV and .DLL
       files will be copied into the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.
   
   11. At the end of the installation, you will be asked to restart
       your computer.
      
       * If your card is an SB16, click the Restart Now button.
         Your installation ends here.

       * If your card is an AWE32 or an SB32 card,
         click the Don't Restart Now button.

   12. Repeat steps 5 to 7.

   13. In the Add Unlisted Or Updated Driver dialog box,
       click Creative Sound Blaster AWE32 MIDI Synth,
       and then click the OK button.

   14. Repeat steps 9 to 10.

   15. At the end of the installation, you will be asked to restart your
       computer.  Now, click the Restart Now button.


     Installing Creative Drivers When NT Service Pack 3 is Installed
     ===============================================================

   1. Go to the directory which contains the NT Service Pack 3
      installation file (NT4SP3_I.EXE). e.g. C:\SP3

   2. Extract the Service Pack 3 files.
      (minimum 55 MB free hard disk space required)
 C:\SP3\NT4SP3_I /X
      During extraction, you will be prompted for a temporary directory.
        e.g. C:\TEMP
  
   3. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
      Control Panel.  

   4. Double-click the Multimedia icon.

   5. On the Devices tab, remove entries with the term "Creative"
      from under Audio Devices and MIDI Devices And Instruments.
      These are the previously installed Sound Blaster drivers.

   6. Restart your computer when prompted.

   7. Log on to your computer as an Administrator.

      You will see a series of "New Hardware Found" message boxes.
  
   8. At the To Install Now dialog box, click the No button.

   9. At the Insert Disk dialog box where you are prompted to insert the
      Service Pack CD-ROM, click the Cancel button.

  10. Click the Start button on the taskbar, point to Programs, and
      then click Command Prompt.
      Insert the Creative CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and type
        E:\WINNTDRV  
      if E:\ is the CD-ROM drive letter.

  11. Run the following command
 C:\TEMP\DEVPRE DEVUPD.INF

  12. At the Resources tab of the Configuration dialog box, click
      the OK button.

  13. Restart your computer for the drivers to take effect.
